Chainmaille jewellery needs to have fairly precise aspect ratios, in most cases. Some weaves have a bit of room to play with, while others will not work in a different ratio.
Due to the lack of choice in pre-made ring available in Australia, I make my owns, allowing for greater control; it takes more time, but worth the effort, allowing me to produce a large variety of ring sizes.
It is a time consuming process!
For a new design, I make a sample piece – usually copper or other leftovers I may have – before proceeding to the final piece.
Some piece will be only wire, some othersI will be incorporating natural elements in the design – seed pods, wood, shells or gemstones – making sure there is a balance between the size and shape of each piece.
While I work with good quality craft wire, for now, these are unfortunately not recyclable. Copper and silver are 100% recyclable, and I am focusing towards silver and gold pieces, gradually phasing out the craft wires.
Foraging for nuts and pods or pieces of bark or wood is another element of my recycling/repurposing process.
I generate very little waste when creating my pieces, and my packaging.
I use recycled materials as much as possible, reduce the need for printing by reusing and upcycling other packaging and cardstock from other projects. I also make my own boxes for some smaller pieces of jewellery.
I contribute 0.5% of my income to carbon removal programs.
I create samples for different weaves allowing for design ideas. Each sample is meticulously described for reference.
The rings are sorted by wire size and aspect ratio. I also use a variety of natural gemstones in my pieces.
